General English Courses

 

“General English” is an English course for adults and young adults that takes students from true beginner to advanced competency in three proficiency levels (i.e., Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced). It has a strong focus on communication skills and is centered on goal and achievement-driven lessons. Our General English classes feature a rigorous speaking pedagogy that activates new language and integrates it with intensive four-skills practice and the soft skills needed for various purposes in life including study and work. A unique cultural fluency syllabus prepares students to use English for work, travel, studies, and life.

In order to apply for the program (at any point) the following admission requirements may be used:

  • RPI College Online Placement Test
  • Interviews (as a follow up for the placement test)
  • Certificates indicating the English language proficiency level of the student from other reputable institutions in Canada

Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Engage in conversations with different groups of people (e.g., family members, school officials, co-workers and supervisors, etc.) in different setting (e.g., home, school, workplace, etc.)
  • Use a variety of grammatical structures for different purposes (e.g., making a request, inviting others, complaining about a product or service, etc.) in spoken and written language
  • Understand and use real life language as used in the society and media
  • Identify and use formal, semi-formal, and informal language in appropriate situations
  • Dentify and use different varieties of English, especially the ones that are popular in Canada (e.g., North American English and British English)
  • Write formal, semi-formal, and informal letters, emails, and messages appropriately
  • Use a wide range of vocabulary for the relevant purposes
  • Understand and use colloquial English

The program has been designed in three general proficiency levels, namely Elementary, Intermediate, and advanced. Each of these levels are presented as four terms (RPE1-4; RPI1-4; RPA1-4). In order to move up to the next proficiency level, students are expected to meet all the following requirements:

  • They need to Attend at least 80% of all classes
  • They need to get 80% of the test scores (Mid-term and Final Exams) of the previous terms.

In order to get the report card for each term, students are required to attend 80% of all sessions. Besides, students must complete 75% of the course evaluation requirements (i.e., attendance, class activity score, progress test results, and final exam score). However, in order to get the certificate of competition for each proficiency level (Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced) and the whole program, they need to attend 80% of all sessions and get 80% of the test scores (Mid-term and Final Exams) of the previous terms.

The program has been designed in three proficiency levels of 120 hours (12 terms of 30 hours). If students apply for the part-time program, the course will take 48 weeks (7.5 hours a week), 40 weeks (9 hours a week), or 24 weeks (15 hours a week), and if students apply for the full-time program, the course will take 16 weeks to complete.

RPI College has designed the “General English” program based on three proficiency levels (i.e., Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced). Each proficiency level is divided into four terms. For every two terms, one textbook has been designated. The main course material for Elementary and Intermediate levels is ‘Connectivity’ and for the Advanced Level, the main textbook is ‘Summit.’
