English Writing Courses


The “RP Writing” is an English writing course has been designed in three terms. Each term helps language learners develop skills, techniques, and strategies they require to improve their writing skill in English. This English writing course offers a carefully structured approach that helps students develop writing skills from the most fundamental (sentence writing) levels to more advanced ones (academic essay writing). Over the course of the three terms, students will learn about writing as both a process and product. The main objective of the English writing course is to encourage language learners to build a solid foundation for becoming independent writers.


The English writing course uses a clear, step-by-step approach as it introduces students to the requirements of academic writing in English. Participants of the course will find a wealth of realistic models to guide them become creative, independent writers. The English writing course provides learners with clear explanations of sentence structure and types, paragraph organization, paragraph types, essay organization and types, as well as the mechanics of writing, and what makes a coherent, organized paragraph or essay.

In order to apply for the program (at any point) the following admission requirements may be used:

  • RPI College Online Placement Test
  • Interviews (as a follow up for the placement test)
  • Certificates indicating the English language proficiency level of the student from other reputable institutions in Canada

Upon completion of each of the terms, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:


Lower-Intermediate Level students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Write all sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex)
  • Identify paragraph organization (Topic sentence, Supporting sentences, and Concluding sentence)
  • Use a variety of means of support (examples, details, facts, statistics, etc.)
  • Know about the characteristics of a unified paragraph (Cohesion, coherence, and unity)
  • Write a well-organized paragraph


Intermediate Level students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Distinguish well-organized paragraphs
  • Identify different types of paragraphs (e.g., descriptive, opinion, cause & effect, comparison & contrast)
  • Use transitions appropriately
  • Learn about the basic structure of an essay
  • Identify a well-organized essay
  • Write opinion essays


Advanced Level students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Identify the features of an essay (unity and coherence)
  • Learn and write different academic essay types (e.g., expository, argumentative, cause & effect, etc.)
  • Write introductions to a wide variety of topics
  • Use transitions both within and between paragraphs
  • Organize body paragraphs about a wide variety of topics (e.g., comparison & contrast, arguments, cause & effects, etc.)
  • Write appropriate conclusion paragraphs for each essay type

Evaluation is done throughout the course: class activity, homework and assignments, progress tests, mid-term and final exams.

A student is required to attend 80% of all sessions. In case the student has to be absent for more than 20%, they can notify the school, so that make up sessions can be arranged; otherwise, the absence is not excused. In addition to attendance requirements, students must complete 75% of the course evaluation (i.e., attendance, class activity score, progress test results, and final exam score).

Each of the 3 terms of the RP Writing course will take 30 hours to complete. Depending on the type of the term (part-time or full-time), one of the following formats will apply:

  • Part-time A: 10 weeks (3 hours a week)
  • Part-time B: 7 weeks (4.5 hours a week)
  • Part-time C: 4 weeks (7.5 hours a week)
  • Part-time D: 2 weeks (15 hours a week)
  • Full-time: 1.5 weeks (22.5 hours a week)
  • In-class instruction
  • Online instruction

Our “RP Writing” course specifically focuses on improving language learners’ writing skill. The course starts with making students familiar with types of sentences (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex), paragraph writing (types and features), and essay writing (organization, types, and features).
