The “Arabic” program is for those who are interested in learning the Arabic language and becoming familiar with the Arabic culture. There are more than 310 million Arabic speakers in the world, which makes it an interesting second or foreign language to learn. Besides, as the number of Arab-speaking immigrants to North America (especially Canada) is increasing, there are many people who would like to learn this language either for communication or for providing services for these immigrants. This program has been designed to meet these people’s needs and interests.

The “Arabic” program is a conversation course for those who are interested in learning colloquial Arabic. The program mainly focuses on the conversational aspects of the language, as it is a language with very different formal and informal features. Therefore, the program is not intended to focus on formal and literary versions of the language, as they are used in religious and literary texts. The program is presented in two conversation courses: Arabic Conversations 1 and Arabic Conversations 2. The program has been designed for adults and young adults who are interested in learning about the Arabic language and culture. The program adopts a communicative methodology which focuses on developing communicative and oral skills. The program guides language learners from Arabic sounds (which are quite different from many other languages in many ways) to more advanced conversations. Besides, participants will learn a large number of vocabulary and grammar used in colloquial Arabic.

The program will be presented in the following format.

Course & Duration (Hour) Fees (CAD)
Arabic
Arabic Conversations 1 60 $660
Arabic Conversations 2 60 $660

As the program has been designed for people who may have absolutely no experience with a language which does not have a Roman alphabetical system, no admission requirements have been determined. Students who are interested in learning the Arabic language can participate in the first course of the program (i.e., Arabic Conversations 1). Nevertheless, they need to meet the completion requirements if they would like to move up to more advanced proficiency levels (i.e., Arabic Conversations 2). However, for those participants with an acceptable level of language proficiency, there will be an oral interview (as the placement) if they would like to take Arabic Conversations 2.

Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Use (pronounce) and identify the Arabic sounds (as this language has a very unique sound system. For example, there are four sounds that are similar to /z/ in English.)

  • Engage in conversations with Arab speakers about day-to-day topics, such as family, shopping, TV programs, etc.

  • Use appropriate language in different situations, as there is a huge difference between the formal and informal varieties of the Arabic language.

  • Use the Arabic grammar appropriately, as the language has a very complicated and unique grammar

  • Read and understand Arabic texts

  • Understand and use real life language as used in the society and media

  • Write short messages in the Arabic language using the Arabic alphabets

  • Use a wide range of vocabulary for the relevant purposes

Evaluation is done throughout the course: class activity, homework and assignments, progress tests, and mid-term and final exams.

In order to get the report card for each term, students are required to attend 80% of all sessions. Besides, students must complete 75% of the course evaluation requirements (i.e., attendance, class activity score, progress test results, and final exam score). However, in order to get the certificate of competition for each course (Arabic Conversations 1 and Arabic Conversations 2) and the whole program, they need to attend 80% of all sessions and get 80% of the test scores (Mid-term and Final Exams) of the previous terms.

This is a part-time program and has been designed in two courses: Arabic Conversations 1 and Arabic Conversations 2. Each course is 60 hours organized in 6 weeks (10 hours a week). Therefore, the whole program is 120 hours.
