The “Persian” program is a communicative one for adults and young adults who are looking for exploring a totally different language. This program takes students from true beginner to more advanced competency during two courses: Elementary Persian and Persian Conversations. The program begins with making language learners familiar with the Persian sound system and alphabets. The Persian alphabets and the writing system are completely different from western languages: writing is from right to left, the vowels are not written in the words, the Persian letters are not in Roman letters, etc. Therefore, it is a big challenge for the learners, which makes learning this language interesting and fun.
The program has a strong focus on communication skills, especially those required for daily interactions. Participants of the program will become familiar with both formal and informal versions of the Persian language; nevertheless, the informal or colloquial version of the language has the highest priority in the program. Therefore, the program features a rigorous speaking pedagogy that activates new language and integrates it with intensive four-skills practice and the soft skills needed for daily interaction with native Persian speakers.

As the program has been designed for people who may have absolutely no experience with a language which does not have a Roman alphabetical system, no admission requirements have been determined for Elementary Persian. Students who are interested in learning the Persian can participate in this course. Nevertheless, they need to meet the completion requirements if they would like to move up to the following course (i.e., Persian Conversations).
Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

Engage in conversations with Persian speakers about day-to-day topics, such as family, shopping, TV programs, etc.

Use appropriate language in different situations, as there is a huge difference between the formal and informal varieties of the Persian language

Use a variety of grammatical structures for different purposes (e.g., making a request, inviting others, complaining about a product or service, etc.) in spoken and written language

Read and understand Persian texts

Understand and use real life language as used in the society and media

Write short messages in the Persian language using the Persian alphabets

Use a wide range of vocabulary for the relevant purposes
Evaluation is done throughout the course: class activity, homework and assignments, progress tests, mid-term and final exams.
In order to get the report card for each term, students are required to attend 80% of all sessions. Besides, students must complete 75% of the course evaluation requirements (i.e., attendance, class activity score, progress test results, and final exam score). However, in order to get the certificate of competition for each course (Elementary Persian and Persian Conversations) and the whole program, they need to attend 80% of all sessions and get 80% of the test scores (Mid-term and Final Exams) of the previous terms.
The “Persian” program is 180 hours. Elementary Persian is 100 hours, and it is presented in two part-time courses: 17 weeks (6 hours a week) and 10 weeks (10 hours a week). Persian Conversations is 80 hours and is presented in two part-time formats: 14 weeks (6 hours a week) and 8 weeks (10 hours a week).
